Ms. Ting's lesson pacing

The usage of lesson plans are not only for achieving the class' Learning Objectives, but also to time the teacher's lesson to see whether all activities or the type of students fit for the type of activities as well as the pace of the class.

The speed of the class was relatively brief and fast, yet it was fairly easy for the students to cope. Like what Ms. Ting mentioned before, they don't linger on a topic for too long as packing too much information in one go or compressing the same topic knowledge under a certain amount of time is not beneficial for student learning. The reasons are due to the fact that students will lose their interest quickly due to repetition. From this also affects the pacing of the lesson. the denser the topic lesson, the longer the time it takes. However, based on this type of teaching and learning experience 6O is experiencing, I believe that Ms. Ting (or the whole Primary years) are applying essentialism to their lessons. They teach the students the core subjects as well as other disciplines that are also considered as the basics for the students to learn before progressing to their older years. Most of the subjects were taught in a broad spectrum as compared to teaching and learning in depth.

Nevertheless, her teaching methods seemed to be proven to be successful as the students were able to keep up with the pace of her lesson. Though, it may be due to the fact that 6O is a more "manageable" class which may contribute to the effectiveness of the lesson. Most of the students seem to be able to progress through the lessons fairly well and it may be due to the fact that they had gotten used to the system of the school. In all honesty, I believe that it was much more interesting when Ms. Ting taught her lessons in a compact way as opposed to local national schools, learning and mastering a topic requires a month as we dwelve on the same concept everyday and sooner or later, when being introduced to a new one, we are prone to forget our old knowledge.

Ms. Ting did a wonderful effort in her time pacing. She managed to end all her lessons in time. This can be seen during 6O's IPC period, where the students were having a show and tell session. Not only all the students managed to finish their presentation, even Ms. Ting herself participated. She didn't disappoint us by preparing her own hobby to showcase to her students.

There were things to note from Ms. Ting's class, one of them was her teaching method. Though the class generally were able to keep up, there would be a couple of those who were left out and she would do a step-by-step approach in introducing her lesson or answer the students' questions. Her reason was to ensure that they understand rather than just knowing the answer then move on. Occasionally, she would check on those who require special attention. One of them was a boy who suffered from mild autism. He would generally require some pushes and reminders, however he managed to keep up with the class in general. In most cases, Ms. Ting would have the Learning Intention as well as the instructions being clearly written on either the whiteboard or displayed on the Smartboard.

Having to plan out the pacing of the class gives me an insight on how teaching can not always go as planned. Thus, lesson plans require long-term experiences for teachers to be able to at least grasp on the flow of the class. This would enable us to carry out our lesson as smoothly as possible. I also believe that having the students' interest and learning capabilities should be taken in consideration so that we will be able to carry out the activities as authentic to the original plan as possible.
