Conclusion

Our experience in TisKL greatly varies from Nexus, of course, different setting, different culture and different values. The largest difference in our current experience is TisKL mostly consist of locals or Asian foreigners which it gives us a sense of familiarity, alongside the fact that the school was originally of a local national setting gives me the reason to marvel its capabilities.

From the two schools, it has opened my eyes and perception that they are similar yet so different. I am very certain that the teachers would do the whatever for the students with their best intentions, unfortunately, it is the way they express them may be interpreted differently from people to people, and this has made me further believe that the "best" education never exists, the one size fits all concept is never suitable for education setting as what Ms. Ting has said, "You will never get the same type of students," and you will never know what type of students they are. Some learning theories may work with your designated philosophy of education, some may not.

In my experience, teaching requires patience and the ability to think on your feet as not all things will go according to your plan. And the students are simply reactive to what our attitudes are. In most cases, I have experienced that teachers react to students and this causes more fiasco to the already chaotic setting. I believe that students should be in an environment where they can not only like the subject but also the teacher. The teacher is the one who will affect how the students view the subject. And surprisingly, the teachers are almost the mirror image of what they have been taught by their teachers. They have been exposed to this experience and without any other ways or methods of teaching, they believe that the way their teacher has taught could apply to their students when they started teaching. Many teachers teach the way they were taught as students. However, that might not be the best way. We need to constantly update ourselves with best practices that work, and how to teach more effectively. For example, a teacher who has only learned “how to” and not “why” when growing up will need to evaluate their own gap in knowledge when drawing out the lesson plans for the semester. This gives the teacher confidence when delivering the lesson in the classroom. A confident teacher inspires respect from students, which in turn reduces discipline problems.

There are things that I need to take note of when I was in TisKL, students in their formal operational stage also requires open interaction with their peers and teachers too. Using the traditional one-way information relay will not be beneficial to the students and even the teachers. Instead we must acquire new and creative (or at least that is suitable) to our students to further optimize their learning. As information and education must not be spoon-fed or force-fed, it however, should be treated as a feast where the students could enjoy. Allow them to be hungry for knowledge. The reason why I said this is due to the fact that, some teachers there apply the teaching method where we can encounter in the local national school setting, student activities and actions are restricted, their way of lesson introduction does not instill curiosity and the desire to know among the students; and instead, the students reacted somewhat negatively to the way the teachers taught due to this method. From planning to carrying out the lessons, we must also take in the students' reaction in consideration so that we can improve ourselves as well as our students.

Our last day photo with the class.
All in all, I believe that the first step of making the students to learn is to make them like you (in a orthodox way). Get to know the students, show that you care and the students will show that they care.
